As achievements of the joint work of Panamanian diplomacy and science, she cited the cooperation agreement with the United States of America and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, for the destruction of ancient chemical munitions, on San José Island, as well as the approval by the International Maritime Organization of new navigation routes in Panamanian waters to minimize collisions between ships and migrating humpback whales.
The Vice President and Chancellor also valued the contribution of the members of the Diplomatic and Consular Career of Panama, as well as the strengthening and generational renewal that this Administration has made through the incorporation, through public tender, of more than a hundred professionals at the forefront of the global agenda that includes different disciplines, among them, scientific, technological and innovation.
In this context, he highlighted that 36 career diplomats work in the foreign service, more than 20 occupy management positions in headquarters and others exercise various functions in different areas of the Foreign Ministry. The occasion was propitious to grant special recognition to Elías Vargas, an official with 50 years of service to the nation, who is an example of the commitment, overcoming and dedication that represent Panamanian diplomacy.
The ceremony included four panels with national and international speakers on topics such as Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability, Science in Diplomacy, Public Policies and Foreign Policy based on scientific evidence, Diplomacy for Science. Transnational Projects of Scientific Research and Panama, Connectivity, Innovation and Competitiveness.
This diplomatic strategy has the support of the National Secretariat of Science and Technology, Government Innovation Authority, Institute of Scientific Research and High Technology Services, Gorgas Memorial Institute, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, City of Knowledge, and the Program of the United Nations for the Environment.
