Huge project: Panama Canal expansion project
The canal expansion project involves building new sets of locks on the Pacific and Atlantic oceans so that ships of great capacity, can pass through the channel. The work includes the removal of about 150 Mm3 of material, the elevation of Gatun Lake, dredging of waterways and entrances in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The total cost of the project amounts to almost five billion dollars.
After the work, the Canal will accommodate large ships, the post panamax and super freighters. This means that, because the structure of today even a Panamax, a delicate operation needs to pass through the locks, with extended lock, not only can spend the larger, but even today panamax happen faster and saves time on waiting for other ships to make the voyage.
